Of late, Sri Lanka has been, surprisingly, blessed with plethora of wicket keeper batsmen. in nineties, there was romesh kaluwithrana, who terrorised bowlers all over the world, with his fearless batting. Then, came one of the all time legend Kumar sangakkara, who rewrote all the batting records, in the history of the game. Even after legend’s retirement, there is no dearth of wicket keeper batsmen, Who have successfully been carrying the legacy. there are Kusal Perera, Niroshan Dickwela, Who are, like the legends, could win the matches, with there destructive batting.
And, as, if this is not enough, there are plenty of next generation wicket-keeper batsmen too, like- Sadeera Samarwikrama, Minod Bhanuka, Who are knocking the door of national team.
And, at junior level too, there is a wicket keeper batsman, who is getting high praise. Sanjula abeywickrama, a 18 year old wicket-keeper batsman, a product of Isipathana college, has played some high impact innings, in last two years.
A left-handed batsman, Who prefers to bat at number four, Sanjula ammessed more than 1300 runs in the last year school season. In senior division too, he impressed one and all with his composed batting, as he made more than 350 runs in just four matches, including two hundreds in under 23 tournament, last year.
A cricket prodigy, he knows only to play cricket in life. ” I just loves batting. It gives me the reason to live, the reason to smile, the reason to succeed and do better in my life” he says.
And for all these, he gives credit to his first coach Meranga gunasekara. “whatever little I have achieved so far in my school career, is just because of my parents and my first coach.”
Just like most of younger players, his favorite player too is Kumar sangakkara, but unlike others from his generation, he loves test cricket more. ” I want to represent Sri Lanka and my dream is to establish myself in the national test team” he concluded.
