Cricket Age Exclusive
As the pressure is mounting from all corners – fans, stake holders – and even Country’s Joint Opposition has demanded Thilanga Sumathipala resignation due to continues decline of Sri Lanka cricket, he is planning to resign and appoint Mohan De’silva as new SLC president, Cricket Age has reliably learnt.
Mohan De’silva is known as Sumathipala closest associate, and currently he is serving SLC as General Secretary. He has served as SLC President for a while in past, when government sacked Sumathipala in his previous tenure.
He had been elected uncontested as SLC new president in 2004, as Sumathipala had decided to re-contest after being held in police custody.
Cricket Age reliably learnt that Sumathipala is mulling over this option seriously along with the Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara. It is known that if Thilanga resigns, so that the rest of the Executive Committee remains. And the chances are very high that after the India series, he can play his musical chairs game and still remain as past President as per the SLC constitution Continue to control the SLC.
The Minister of Sports is hoping to either call for an early SLC election scheduled for January 2018 or as per SLC constitution Sumathipala will resign and call for a Special General Meeting and still hold the reigns.
But the cricket loving public need to know that Thilanga cannot hold office, since in the defamation case filed by him, he has agreed that his family runs the Sporting Star and as per ICC if he is involved, he cannot be involved in Sr Lanka Cricket in any form.
