Thilanga Sumathipala days as the President of SLC are numbered, it seems. Under his wings, not only the National team is suffering big time, now the domestic cricket is also heading towards disaster. Today, in a major setback, the proposed meeting, that had been to discuss the tournament structure, turned into a flop affair, and put SLC into more embracing situation.
Today the SLC tournament committee had invited all Premier Clubs to announce this year’s tournament structure. When Bandula Diusanayaje briefed the Clubs on the tournament steucture, few members, Mainly Michael de Zoysa former National Team Manager and Former Asst. Secretary tournament committee, cut loose and started shelling the Dissanayake and his Committee by stating that they have ruined Club cricket and its structure.
The situation turned bizzare, as the meeting could not proceed from then onwards.
The main issue was with the scheduling of the tournament. The Tournament Committee had wanted to commence the tournaments from October 1st week. But, all Club members opposed it, by stating that cricket should not be played in the rainy season.
Their concern was that, priority should be given to Club cricket, since all clubs have invested in developing players and scouting talent and providing them with job opportunities and further developing their skills.
As today’s meeting turned out a failed attempt, The Tournament Committee is now in an embarrassing position and to add salt to the wounds the Pillar Head in charge of Domestic Cricket K. Mathivanan was not present to arrest the situation.
Further it is learnt that K. Mathivanan is Also in favor of Club cricket and a major calamity will be at hand in the coming days.
After today’s drama, it is safe to say that under Thilanga Sumathipala’s administration in addition to International cricket, now Domestic cricket is also falling apart.
