Sri Lanka selectors have named Kamindu Mendis to lead the team for the U19 Asia Cup, while Jehan Daniel will be his deputy. The 15 players squad has also been approved by Sports Ministry, Cricket Age has learnt.
Kamindu, a batting allrounder, can bowl with both hands that brought him into limelight during the U19 World Cup in 2016. A product of Richmond College, he is in blistering form in ongoing season.
Jehan Daniel represent St. Joseph College and has been considered as the best under 19 fast bowling allrounder in the country.
Trinity College Hasitha Boyagoda, De Mazenod College batting sensation Krishan Sanjula and fast bowler Nipun Ransika are notable inclusions to the squad.
The selected 15, have been in continuous training since July 2017 as part of a larger squad of 44, and have been engaged in focused training sessions not only in their cricketing, but in lifestyle and personality development under SLC’s Holistic Player Development programme.
The squad will travel to Kandy on the 16th to engage in training at the Centre of Excellence Kandy, due to the inclement weather currently being experienced in Colombo, and will be privileged to have the full gamut of resources of the state-of-the art Centre of Excellence at their disposal.
The tournament will be played in Malaysia in November. India, Pakistan and Bangladesh along with Sri Lanka have earned an automatic qualification for the tournament.
Two teams each from the Western and Southern Region will join them with a total of eight teams featuring in the tournament.
