Legendary Mahela Jayawardene has backed young Sri Lanka batsman Kusal Mendis, amids several media reports that he has been dropped from the test squad that will travel to India next week.
There were reports in media that Selectors have decided to drop 22-year old batsman, though official squad is yet to be announced. The 15-men squad has been forwarded to Sports Ministry for the approval, but the news that Mendis has been dropped went viral.
So much so that even Mahela Jayawardene raised his concern over Mendis rumoured snub.
“Don’t understand how @KusalMendis1 is not in the test squad? Even he is not playing should be in India. That’s how young players learn” posted Mahela on his twitter handle.
Not only this, when a twitterati termed Mendis snub a fair call, Mahela reminded him of Young batting prodigy brilliance over the year.
“@MahelaJay @KusalMendis1 Fair call. He was given enough chances. He deserve this for his over confident and yeah he was bit overrated too” Wrote Aflal Hussain.
“I am sorry.. when he scored one of the best hundreds against India and that was 3 test matches ago..looks like u have not been watching ?” Mahela furiously replied him.
Interestingly, several Sri Lanka media houses got the leaked squad yesterday, but there were only 14 names! Also Mendis name was not there in the list.
Latest update Cricket Age has learnt that the Selectors are expected to announce the squad on Sunday.
