Former Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews will bat at number four during the forthcoming test series against India, Cricket Age learns.
“Contrary to his normal batting position, Mathews will bat higher, at number four in the test series against India” A Team Official told Cricket Age.
“He is our best batsman in all three formats and the needs Angelo the batsman against India on their home soil” The source told further.
It has also learnt that Mathews will play as a specialist batsman in the series, and will not bowl his medium pace, in order to avoid any further injury.
Of late, Mathews has become injury prone, that caused big headache for Sri Lanka Team management. In this year alone, he has missed T20 series against Australia, home series against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka’s tour of UAE against Pakistan.
In all, Since 31st August 2016, Mathews has missed 37 international matches for Sri Lanka due to various Injuries. In that period, he has missed 6 tests, 20 ODI’s and 11 T20I matches.
After playing the first Test in Kolkata from November 16-20, the teams move to Nagpur for the second, which starts on November 24. The final Test will be played in Delhi between December 2-6.
During Sri Lanka’s home series against India, the hosts lost all nine games – three Tests, five one-day internationals and a lone Twenty20 – between July and September.
