Kamindu Mendis, Sri Lanka U19 Captain for the upcoming World Cup, Starting from January 3 in New Zealand, has been suffering from a Calf injury and is unable to practice, Cricket Age learns. More shockingly, SLC is trying it’s best to hide his injury, even as the team is scheduled to depart in few hours time.
Kamindu, a batting prodigy from prestigious Richmond College, has been named the captain for the month long mega event. However, it has learnt that he suffered a calf injury during team’s 10 day’s practice session in Kandy a week ago. Yesterday, there was a practice match between U19 team and Colts Cricket Club at Police Park, but Kamindu couldn’t play due to the same injury. According to sources, there is another medical checkup of Kamindu, on today, in order to reasses his condition.
Since last one month, U19 team has been battling with injuries and controversies. However, team management approach towards the certain players seems baised. Sanjula abeywikrama, a dashing left-handed wicket keeper batsman, got ill during the preparation three months ago, so he had been discarded from the final squad. Nipun Ransika, the tall fast bowler, injured before the Asia Cup, and have been sidelined since then.
However, The same team management is mum over Kamindu Injury and trying best to keep this under wraps. It has learnt that Coach Roy Dias is still backing Kamindu to lead the team and is hoping against the hope that he will be fit before the tournament.
