Sri Lanka shorter formats captain Angelo Mathews has come forward to support Steve Smith and David Warner.
Smith and Warner, Australia’s captain and vice-captain, were banned for 12 months for a ball-tampering incident in South Africa also involving Cameron Bancroft, who was suspended for nine months.
However, like many other prominent players of the world cricket, Mathews also feels that they deserves a second chance.
“Feel for @stevesmith49 @davidwarner31 and bancroft.what happened was very unfortunate. Huge mistake but they admitted and will learn.Let us show them some compassion to overcome this pain. They deserve a second chance” wrote Mathews On his twitter handle.
Chaminda Vaas, the legendary Sri Lanka fast bowler, also expressed the same sentiments.
“The history of cheating in sport is as old as time. What’s they did was wrong and against the spirit of the Gentlemen’s game. What has happened is truly unfortunate. But it’s time we give them some space to recover from this pain. Let’s Forgive, put this behind and move forward” wrote Chaminda Vaas.
