The decision of the Indian team management to make the yo-yo test compulsory for the players drew a mixed response. While few backed the stand of the management to put extra attention on fitness, few of the former players did not welcome the decision to go about things this way. A failure in clearing the test resulted in Mohammed Shami and Ambati Rayudu losing their place in the Indian team.
And, now the mark of 16.1 – the minimum number to clear the yo-yo test – is all set to be increased to 16.3, making it more difficult for the players to make it to the Indian team.
While there is much talk about the test in India, Dr Jens Bangsbo, founder of the yo-yo test, has said that one cannot select players on basis of just a single test.
“The question here is clear – you cannot select players based on a single test. A single test cannot determine the exact performance in a game. The question is clear – you cannot select players based on a single test,” he told Sportstar.
He made it clear that clearing yo-yo test is necessary and those who think that it is just one-off things can go for a walk. “You have a certain ability but if you are fit then you can enhance it. That’s why we emphasise on YoYo test. If anyone thinks that this is a one-off thing, he is sadly mistaken. He can take a walk,” he had said.
