In 2015, Then Chairman of Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) Interim Committee Sidath Wettimuny Took a Courageous Step To Change the Future of Cricket in the Island. He took a bold move and managed to convince International Cricket Council (ICC) To allow to change the condition of the SLC. More importantly, he also got this assurance from the ICC in written and got the much needed support of country’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickramsinghe as well on this courageous attempt.
Sadly, it could never happened, as Thilanga Sumathipala, the most controversial SLC President till date, lobbied against the proposed constitutional changes, along with Then Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara. Not only this, Sumathipala also managed the support of ‘His political Guardian’ and as a result those changes couldn’t be implemented.
Then, in 2017, Dayasiri again Invited Greats like Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara and Aravinda De Silva by misleading them that this time around he is willing to make the amendments in the SLC Constitution. Legends believed and gave their everything for the betterment of the Sri Lanka Cricket.
Unfortunately, Dayasiri deceived them once again, and thrown their proposal into dustbin.
As a result, Sri Lanka Cricket is again in shambles! Reason, Dayasiri (On the instructions of his political Guardians and Buddies) didn’t allow anyone to cure the Sri Lanka Cricket!
Now, his successor, Faizer Mustapha is also giving the same kind of impression : That he is willing to change SLC constitution.
After Sumathipala Led administration departed from the SLC on May 31st after falling to conduct election on time, SLC is under the observation of Sports Minister.
Like Dayasiri, Mustapha is also taking suggestions from everyone. In last two months, Kumar Sangakkara alone has met Mustapha multiple times. Sidath Wettimuny, one of the the most respected former Sri Lanka player and administrator, has also met and has given suggestions to the minister. In addition, another great Icon of Sri Lanka Cricket Roshan Mahanama has also given his valuable thoughts on the issue.
Keeping all this in mind, Faizer has invited all past Presidents today itself to discuss the future of the Sri Lanka Cricket.
And, today’s outcome will give a clearer picture : Whether Faizer Mustapha is willing to change the SLC or it is another showoff like Dayasiri?
