Since last two decades, Thilanga Sumathipala has been presenting and ‘packaging’ himself as the ‘flag bearer’ of Sri Lanka Cricket. He used his political influence big time to make Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) his own property. For nearly one decade, Sumathipala ran SLC as any other company of his ‘Sumathi Group’, with the association of some of the most notorious Officials, who were committed to rob the board at any cost!
The most important thing is Sumathipala strategically ‘modified’ SLC constitution for his benefits. With the help of Sports Ministers likes Dayasiri Jayasekara, he created an environment, where it was become near impossible for any other person to win a SLC election.
Sumathipala always shouted Big and loud that stakeholders are the sole proprietors of SLC and their ‘interests’ must be looked after as the first priority. Entire Sri Lanka knows, how Sumathipala had obliged SLC stakeholders for years, through various ‘illegal’ ways. In return, those stakeholders, who have been contributing nothing to Sri Lanka Cricket, have always backed Sumathipala unconditionally.
After his shameful departure on May 31st from the SLC, he has used these stakeholders big time in his attempts to make a comeback at SLC.
Few months ago, Shammi Silva (the so called co flag bearer of Sri Lanka Cricket), forced all the stakeholders to sign in a letter to ICC in supports of Sumathipala. Then few weeks later, he gathered few stakeholders at his Colombo Cricket Club (CCC) and made a press conference in Sumathipala’s support.
Mysteriously, not only Sumathipala, all these stakeholders are also silent on various match fixing charges and The International Cricket Council (ICC) ongoing inquiry in Sri Lanka.
Sumathipala never gave a single statement on these issues! His loyal stakeholders never called a press conference on these issues!
No one knows why they are silent? No one knows, why their boss Sumathipala is silent? No one knows, why they all are coming forward and urging ICC to clean the corruption from the cricket in Sri Lanka?
Maybe ICC Anti Corruption Unit’s discloser in next few days will give an indication why all these are silent!
