Former Indian cricketer S Sreesanth, who is facing a life ban after he was allegedly involved in a spot-fixing case during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018, has told the Supreme Court that he should be allowed to play cricket again as the punishment he is facing is ‘too harsh.’ The former Indian seamer has also appealed that the punishment should be reduced as he is running against time to take the cricket field once again.
Sreesanth’s lawyer, senior advocate Salman Khurshid told the Supreme Court bench of Justices Ajay Rastogi and Ashok Bhushan that the 36-year-old has already been acquitted by a trial court in the IPL spot-fixing case and his life ban should hence be cancelled.
“Life ban is too harsh. He is already 36. He cannot even play local club cricket because of the ban. He wants to play cricket and he got some offer from England but the offer will disappear if he is not allowed to play,” Khurshid said.
The Supreme Court bench postponed the hearing and stated that the Delhi High Court should first clear the take on the appeal filed against Sreesanth’s acquittal in the IPL spot-fixing case. The apex court deferred the case until the third week of January.
