Former Australian skipper Allan Border has voiced out his concern regarding dropping Aaron Finch down the middle order after he was dismissed for a duck in the very first over of the innings in Adelaide. Finch was castled by Ishant Sharma as he uprooted all these three stumps with a peach of an incoming delivery. Finch was the first choice opener for the team management for the first Test and did even get the backing of former skipper Ricky Ponting as well to bat up the order at the start of the Test match.
In his column for Fox Sports, Border told that pushing Finch down the order would demoralize his confidence in his young Test career so far.
“There have been plenty of calls for Aaron Finch to be dropped down the Australian order as soon as possible but I think that would send the wrong message to the 32-year-old,” He bats well in the middle order but if Australia moved him mid-match – after he was selected as an opener – then he might start to think he’s on a slippery slope out of the Test side” wrote the former Aussie skipper.
Earlier, Ponting criticised his shot selection after he was dismissed off the third ball of the Australian innings.
“The shot we saw today is not what a good Test match opener should do third ball of the innings. The new ball on that wicket was always going to be the hardest time to bat and he went for a hard cover drive. Sometimes that can happen, but he’s got a lot of work to do, I think,” Ponting told Cricket Australia on Day 3 of the Test match.
