The much awaited Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) election are most likely to be postponed at least by one month after newly appointed Sports Minister Harin Fernando has expressed his reservations about conducting the election on previously given date of February 7.
Cricket Age had published on December 11 itself, that the SLC election would be postponed.
The previous Sports Minister Faizer Mustapha had started the process for the SLC election in February after getting the instructions from the International Cricket Council (ICC).
However, now, his successor Harin Fernando needs some more time for the election.
“I have looked at the possibilities of having the election as schedule for 7th of February 2019. Unfortunately as per the sports regulations, Gazette 2089/56 dated 2018.09.22, with regards to election, there are legal issues pending” he said on Friday, January 4.
“Especially in appointing the election “Appeal Committee”. Therefore I am seeking legal advice from Attorney General’s Department. Ones the opinion is sorted, I will take necessary steps to conduct Sri Lanka Cricket Elections” he added further.
It is noteworthy that after the withdrawal from former SLC President Thilanga Sumathipala from the upcoming AGM, the board election have turned out a interesting battle with all the camps are trying hard to take cricket under their wings. Sumathipala has nominated former vice president Mohan De Silva and notorious treasurer Shammi Silva from his side. The opposite Camp consisted stalwarts likes Jayantha Dharmadasa, Nishantha Ranatunga and K. Mathivanan. Sri Lanka’s former world cup winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga is also contesting for the vice president post!
