In a shocking development, Sri Lanka’s former allrounder Farveez Maharoof has managed to grab another high profile post in the national setup, as, on Friday, he was appointed as the manager of the under 19 team for the upcoming home Series against touring Pakistan by the Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC).
Interestingly, Maharoof is already in the junior selection committee, which was appointed by Sri Lanka’s Sports Minister Harin Fernando last month. But most noteworthy, he is still actively involved in his media commitments (pre and post match analysis for media groups) and commentatory.
Even though it is a clear case of conflict of interest, insiders says that Maharoof has mysteriously become ‘powerful’ in Sri Lanka cricket since November last year. According to sources, instead of fielding at SLC, Maharoof is often seen roaming around Sports Ministry.
“One can’t even say that the newly elected administration is backing him, because the same administration was there last time as well. It means, someone else (outside of SLC) is pushing him. His appointment as junior selector is justifiable, but holding two posts at same time, especially when he is associated with media as well, is something beyond logic” a top SLC official told Cricket Age.
Interestingly, Maharoof, Who played 22 tests, 109 ODIs and 8 T20Is for Sri Lanka, has still not officially announced his retirement from international cricket.
