Indian all-rounder Vijay Shankar was on Monday (July 1) ruled out of the ongoing World Cup due to a toe injury and will be replaced by Mayank Agarwal. Vijay was struck on the toe while batting against Jasprit Bumrah in the nets ahead of India’s encounter against Afghanistan at Southampton on June 20.
Vijay did play the game, scoring 29 in 41 balls but wasn’t called upon to bowl. He also played subsequently against West Indies in Manchester where he made 14 but didn’t bowl again. However, he was left out of the encounter against England on Sunday due to the injury.
Karnataka opener Agarwal, 28, who made his Test debut against Australia last year, has not yet played in the ODI format.
“Vijay Shankar sustained a non-displaced fracture of the left big toe, which will require a minimum of three weeks to heal. The injury rules him out of the ongoing World Cup,” the Indian team management informed the media on Monday (July 1) morning.
“The Indian team management has requested the ICC to consider Mayank Agarwal as his replacement,” the team official informed.
Agarwal was not initially named as part of five replacements by the Indian selectors for the World Cup. The list included Pant, who has replaced injured Shikhar Dhawan, Ambati Rayudu, Axar Patel, Navdeep Saini and Ishant Sharma. However, teams are allowed to make changes out of this list of replacements subject to approval by ICC technical committee.
