The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Saturday confirmed the appointment of former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori as the team’s spin bowling consultant, taking a huge step towards the reshuffle process. The board has also roped in former South African pacer Charl Langeveldt as the new bowling coach of Bangladesh. Vettori comes with decent coaching experience having served as the head coach of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) side in the Indian Premier League (IPL) from 2014 to 2018 before being replaced by former Indian coach Gary Kirsten.
The former Kiwi skipper also served as the head coach of Euro Slam franchise Dublin Chiefs in the inaugural edition of the tournament. The former left-arm spinner, however, has been appointed on a short term basis and will be with the Bangladesh side for only hundred days during which he will work with the first-team spinners and also conduct spin bowling camps in Dhaka this year. Vettori will be with the team when they tour India later this year and for the World T20 next year.
While Vettori has been roped in as a replacement for Sunil Joshi, Langeveldt replaced Courtney Walsh as the duo’s contract was not renewed by the BCB. Langeveldt has previously served as South Africa’s fast bowling coach and as the bowling coach of the Afghanistan national team.
“This is a team on the rise and there is so much experience and potential. It will be a pleasure to work with the likes of Shakib Al Hasan, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam and the other up and coming youngsters which I am looking forward to with a lot of interest,” Vettori said.
Bangladesh are currently playing Sri Lanka in a three-match ODI series which got underway on Friday with the Tamim Iqbal-led side facing a 91-run defeat in Colombo.
