Mayank Agarwal on verge of becoming fastest Indian to score 1000 Test runs

The second Test between India and Bangladesh will be a historic occasion given it is the first-ever pink-ball Test played in India. Both India and Bangladesh would be looking to make a mark when they take to the field at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata in front of a capacity crowd. It will be a monumental occasion for Indian opener Mayank Agarwal, who is on the verge of becoming the fastest Indian player to score 1000 Test runs. Agarwal will also have the opportunity to equalise Sir Donald Bradman’s record of scoring 1000 Test runs in just 13 innings when he walks out to bat in the historic pink-ball Test.

Agarwal is on the cusp of surpassing the likes of Vinod Kambli, Cheteshwar Pujara, Sunil Gavaskar, Sanjay Manjrekar to become the fastest to score 1000 Test runs for India. The swashbuckling opener is just 142 runs away from attaining the record but he will have to make sure he scores big in the first innings of the pink-ball Test.

Overall, Herbert Sutcliffe and ED Weekes hold the record of being the fastest players to score 1000 Test runs (innings wise). Both Sutcliffe and Weekes had reached the landmark in 12 innings whereas Bradman touched the milestone in 13 innings. Agarwal, who has played in 12 innings so far in his short but impressive career, needs 143 runs to equalise Bradman’s tally of scoring 1000 Test runs.
