The race between India captain Virat Kohli and vice-captain Rohit Sharma for T20I batting supremacy ended in a stalemate in 2019 with both the modern-day icons finishing the year with 2633 runs each.
Virat Kohli is all set to go past Rohit Sharma and become the leading run-scorer in T20I cricket once again as the skipper gears up for a 3-match T20I series against Sri Lanka from January 5.
Considering his workload, the senior selection committee decided to rest Rohit Sharma from India’s first assignment in the New Year. While he will miss the T20I series against Sri Lanka, Rohit will be back when India host Australia in a 3-match ODI series from January 14.
Kohli has amassed 2633 runs from just 75 matches and has scored at a staggering average of 52.66 in T20Is. On the other hand, Rohit has taken 104 matches to get there at an average of a little over 30 runs per match.
Martin Guptill of New Zealand is a close third with 2436 runs in 83 matches. In the T20 World Cup year, expect Rohit and Kohli to keep swapping places at the top of the T20I batting charts.
Meanwhile, Kohli is also on the verge of breaking Rohit’s record for the most runs in India-Sri Lanka bilateral T20I cricket. Rohit leads the list with 289 runs in 15 matches while Kohli is just 7 runs away from surpassing his deputy.
Notably, Kohli has scored 283 runs in just 4 matches against Sri Lanka in T20Is with an average of over 90.
