The Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) on Monday suspended the ongoing domestic tournament until further notice as a precautionary measure in the wake of the deadly coronavirus that has been spreading in the country and worldwide at a rapid pace.
“Due to the prevailing health concerns (Covid-19) , the Tournament Committee of the board decided to postpone the Major Club Tier “A” and Tier “B” matches, which were scheduled to be played during the upcoming weekend, until further notice” SLC said in a statement.
Last Friday, the England’s cricket team abruptly pulled out of a tour of Sri Lanka over the “unprecedented” crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic. A practice match in Colombo was halted as the team announced they would be flying back to London. The decision was taken by England Cricket Board (ECB) today after the country identified hundreds of new cases and most deaths in a single day last week.
Sporting events have taken a hit across the globe; among others, the NBA have suspended their season until further notice, ATP tournaments in California stand cancelled, and the Bahrain Grand Prix will be closed to spectators. On the other hand, the India-South Africa and the New Zealand-Australia ODI series were also been called off.
