Former pacer Atul Wassan supports the idea of split captaincy for the Indian team and feels that Rohit Sharma should take over as captain in the shortest format to relieve some load off current skipper Virat Kohli.
There are quite a few in the cricketing fraternity who feel Rohit should be given more responsibility in limited-overs cricket with some even suggesting that he should take over the captaincy from Kohli.
Wassan is of the opinion that leading in all three formats, especially the Indian team, becomes very stressful for one person which is why some pressure must be taken off Kohli’s shoulders.
“Yes, I think India should think about split captaincy because it is too much load. Virat (Kohli) loves it, I think he wants to captain all three formats. But Rohit Sharma has shown us that he’s an instinctive leader,” Wassan was quoted by sportskeeda.
The theory of Rohit being a better captain than Kohli is also supported by his stellar record in white-ball cricket. The Hitman has led India in 10 ODIs so far, winning 8 of them, while in 19 T20Is he has won 15 games.
His win percentage in both 50-overs and T20 international cricket as captain is much better than Kohli even though the latter has been captain for a longer period and led India in more games.
But India are yet to win any major tournament under Kohli whereas under Rohit, the team won the Nidahas Trophy in 2018 and the Asia Cup in the same year.
“His record is good, he leads from the front. With Mumbai Indians, he did the same. In Test cricket, Virat is the boss.
“In one day-cricket, Virat should be the captain, but in T20Is, take the stress out of Virat’s life, and let someone else lead the side like Rohit Sharma,” Wassan added.
