The T20 World Cup is all set to be postponed as the International Cricket Council (ICC) prepares to meet with Cricket Boards on 28th May and take a decision with regard to hosting the T20 World Cup in Australia.
Cricket Australia (CA) will have to give clarity and update to the members as well as the ICC regarding what Australia plans on doing to host the World Cup as per schedule. Questions will be asked to the CA in the meeting pertaining to:
1. Will your government allow members from 16 nations to travel to your country in October?
2. Lockdown in Australia is till September, then how do you propose to host the World Cup?
3. What are the quarantine rules going to be in Australia once the lockdown is lifted?
4. Do you expect top countries to land in Australia and play such a big tournament without any major practice?
Australian cricketer, David Warner, has said in the past, hosting the T20 World Cup as per schedule is going to be very difficult.
The common understanding between all parties involved is that it is going to be next to impossible to hold the tournament as per schedule with spectators, for various reasons. The Australian government has announced a lockdown in the country till September, to contain the spread of Covid-19 and adhere to norms of social distancing. So, will the Australia government then decide to allow members from 16 different nations, with their support staff, to travel Down Under and play a world tournament?
In the backdrop of all this, the meeting on May 28 comprising all cricket boards and the ICC via video conferencing will be extremely important.
