After the end of the lockdown, the top officials of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) are on a touring spree all over the Island. Accordingly, today (Friday) SLC President Shammi Silva and Vice president Ravin Wickramaratne are traveling to Jaffna – northern part of the country – to inspect a ground and distributing cricket kits, Cricket Age learns.
“Both Shammi and Ravin have gone there along with engineers, HR Manager Tanesh Dias and Head of NDC Kamal Dharmasiri to inspect a ground at Mallakam in Jaffna. During their trip, more than 25 cricket kits will be distributed among School kids and players” an insider at SLC told Cricket Age.
According to sources, the Jaffna district cricket association has started constructing a ground using SLC initial funds and now expecting to get the balance amount. The ground will have a turf wicket to play domestic cricket, and the investment will be in the region of Rs 20-25 million
Few years ago, former SLC President Thilanga Sumathipala had also visited Jaffna and had promised to build an international cricket Stadium. Initial money was also released by SLC, but nothing happened! Interestingly, Jaffna is being considered as stronghold of SLC defunct vice president K. Mathivanan. In the last SLC election, Jaffna District cricket association voted for Mathivanan, but snubbed Jayantha Dharmadasa!
The next SLC election is scheduled for August 2021.
