In an unexpected turn of events, former president Jayantha Dharmadasa was Wednesday appointed as the new Vice President of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), barely few hours after K Mathivanan resigned from the post with immediate effect earlier in the day.
“Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce that Mr. K. Mathivanan who holds the Office of Hony. Vice President of Sri Lanka Cricket has tendered his resignation today to the Office of Secretary of Sri Lanka Cricket. The resignation of Mr. Mathivanan will come to effect immediately. The Executive Committee at its Emergency Meeting held this afternoon, accepted the resignation of Mr. Mathivanan and proceeded with appointing a Vice President for the position vacant in terms of the provisions of the Constitution of Sri Lanka Cricket. Accordingly, the Committee unanimously decided to appoint Dr. Jayantha Dharmadasa as the new Vice President of SLC for the position made vacant by virtue of Mr. Mathivanan’s resignation” a SLC media release stated.
The SLC also tried to give a new twist to Mathivanan resignation, by claiming that he took the decision to resign to avoid an inquiry.
“Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to state that the said resignation of Mr. Mathivanan comes in the wake of the recent unanimous decision of Executive Committee to hold an inquiry against Mr. Mathivanan for indulging in unethical practices in his capacity as an Office Bearer” the SLC media release stated further.
At the same time, SLC welcomed Dharmadasa’s return to cricket fold, after a year long self isolation.
“SLC warmly welcome Dr. Jayantha Dharmadasa and congratulate him on his appointment as a Vice President of Sri Lanka Cricket” the SLC media release stated further.
