BCCI unlikely to host domestic cricket this season

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is unlikely to host any domestic tournaments in the country this season owing to the coronavirus crisis in the country. India is on the verge of surpassing Brazil to become the second worst-affected nation in the world from COVID-19 after the US. India has been witnessing a record number of cases on a daily basis which makes it almost impossible for BCCI to plan the resumption of domestic cricket in the country.

As per a report in Times of India, no official decision has been made yet but the BCCI is in talks to not host any premier domestic tournaments like Ranji Trophy, Deodhar Trophy and Duleep Trophy among others this season. BCCI president Sourav Ganguly had earlier assured a curtailed domestic season to the state associations, however, increasing COVID cases across the country possesses a huge challenge for the board.

“In certain states, it’s bad. In other states, it’s worse. The numbers are unrelenting. In such a scenario, how does one plan anything over a period of three or four months, when you’re not sure what’s in store tomorrow,” sources in the know-how of developments were quoted as saying by Times of India.

BCCI had plans of hosting some domestic tournaments which would have been economically beneficial for all stakeholders involved when Ganguly had written a letter to state associations in July. However, that looks unlikely now as preparing a bio-secure bubble for thousands of cricketers taking part in different tournaments across the country is deemed unfeasible.
