Sri Lanka legend and SunRisers Hyderabad bowling coach Muttiah Muralitharan went to hospital for a routine checkup, as he has had a stent fitted to unblock an artery, his manager for more than 3 decades and renowned philanthropist Kushil Gunasekera Monday told Cricket Age.
There were media reports since yesterday night stating that the spin legend underwent an angioplasty procedure after being admitted in Chennai’s Apollo Hospital for cardiac evaluation on Sunday.
“He went for a routine check up on doctors advise and not a heart attacke as reported by few media publications. I spoke to him in the morning today and he was absolutely fine” Gunasekera told Cricket Age.
“Former Sri Lankan cricket player was admitted for cardiac evaluation at Apollo Hospital, Greams Road, Chennai on 18.04.2021. He underwent successful coronary angioplasty with scents yesterday under the care of Dr. G Sengottuvelu,” said Apollo Hospital in its latest medical bulletin on Monday.
IPL protocols, specified by concerned authorities, require that Muralitharan put himself in quarantine for some days after the surgery. He will be back in action only after the quarantine phase in view of the coronavirus.
“Yes. Now, he will be quarantined for 6 days, as per the IPL protocols. Only after that he will be able to rejoin his IPL team” Gunasekera, founder trusty of Foundation Of Goodness (FOG) along with Murali, added.
Muralitharan celebrated his 49th birthday on April 17.
Muralitharan is the highest wicket-taker in international cricket with 1347 wickets that includes a record 800 scalps in Tests, 534 in ODIs and 13 in T20 internationals for Sri Lanka.
After winning their first match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 10 runs, SRH have lost their next two matches against Royal Challengers Banaglore (RCB) and Mumbai Indians (MI). The 2016 champions are currently at the bottom of the 8-team points table.
David Warner’s team will next face Punjab Kings on Wednesday.
