England captain Joe Root admitted that tactical blunders during the first session of Day 5 swung the momentum in India’s favor and ultimately led to the hosts losing the Test at Lord’s on Monday. Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah put up an unbeaten 89-run partnership which all but eliminated any chance of an England win.
England ended up losing all 10 wickets in the second and third sessions as India pulled off a 151-run win.
“A lot on my shoulders, as captain you take responsibility, tactically we could have done things differently – we went from a position where we could win to being behind,” said Root in the presentation ceremony after the match on Monday.
“More than anything we got a few things wrong. Credit to them (Shami and Bumrah), they played well for that partnership. But I’d do things differently,” he said.
England now trail 1-0 in the series. Root said that England have found themselves in this position and can bounce back. “We’ve found ourselves in this position before and come out on top. Be patient, learn the lessons and be better next time,” he said.
Root also praised all-rounder Moeen Ali and fast bowler Mark Wood, who were not part of the squad for the first Test. “His attitude (Wood), the way he goes about things…Mo’s come back well. There are things we can take from this game. We’re used to playing five-match series. Important not to panic and stay calm,” said Root
