Went back to dressing room crying: Iyer on shoulder injury

Written by Vishwas Gupta

India batsman Shreyas Iyer suffered an injury blow before the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 as he injured his shoulder during the opening ODI against England in March. Given that there’s a T20 World Cup next month, the tournament was an important one for Iyer and performance in the T20 league would have confirmed him a spot in the squad.

However, he had to miss the first phase of the league and is set to make his comeback in the UAE leg of the tournament, which will kick off after the India squad for the ICC event will be announced. Middle-order batsman Suryakumar Yadav has been doing well and looks set to keep his spot. It will be interesting to see if Iyer keeps his spot in the squad or not.

Ahead of his much-awaited comeback to competitive cricket, Iyer spoke about his injury and revealed that he went to the dressing room crying. He had to undergo shoulder surgery due to injury.

“Currently I’m feeling amazing, the journey was awesome to be honest. I never hesitated for a while but right after the injury I was sulking a bit and I didn’t know what to do. I went into the dressing room crying and it took me a while to digest it. But at the end of the day you need to go through all of it. It is a setback which you have to push back and come back strong,” Iyer told India Today.

Not just IPL, Iyer was also ruled out of the Sri Lanka tour that took place in July. He would have been a strong contender to lead the Men in Blue but wasn’t deemed fit.

Iyer cleared all his fitness tests a couple of weeks back and reached UAE recently to kick off the preparations for the season. Unlike other Delhi Capitals’ players, Iyer has already played a competitive fixture there.
