England has been docked five World Test Championship points for its slow over-rate against Australia in the opening Ashes Test.
The ICC came down hard on Joe Root’s side, also docking the side 100 per cent of their match fee.
Match referee David Boon, the former Australia batter, imposed the penalty on England after its nine-wicket defeat at the Gabba shortly after lunch on the fourth day.
Under the ICC’s playing conditions for over-rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, as well as being docked a World Test Championship point for each over short.
“As per Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions, a team is docked one point for each over short,” the iCC said in a statement.
“Match referee David Boon has also penalized England 100% of their match fee for falling five overs short of the targets after adjusting for time allowances. Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel charges players 20% of their match fee for every over the team falls short on.”
England has now lost seven points, following penalties earlier this year against India in its home series, leaving it ahead of only Bangladesh on the current World Test Championship standings.
England have slipped 7th spot on the 8-team World Test Championship 2021-23 table with just 9 points from 5 matches. Joe Root’s men were trailing 1-2 against India at home in a 5-Test series wherein they were docked 2 points as well.
Meanwhile, Australia, who opened the WTC tally with 12 points after the dominant win over England saw their hero of the Gabba Test, Travis Head fined 15 percent of his match fee for usage of audible obscenity.
