Former India fast bowler and World Cup-winner, Madan Lal on Saturday said he is shocked that Virat Kohli quit Test captaincy but added that he believes that the star batter is still “very annoyed” with the selectors’ decision to remove him as ODI captain.

Kohli quit as India’s Test captain on Saturday, January 15, a day after India lost a Test series in South Africa. With the announcement, Kohli will no longer lead India in any format after having quit T20I captaincy last year. He was sacked as India’s ODI captain in December 2021.

Notably, when Kohli quit as T20I captain ahead of the T20 World Cup in September-October, he had said he wanted to continue as ODI and Test captain. However, things have turned controversial ever since as Kohli was removed as ODI captain in a manner in which that led to more questions than answers.

“It has definitely surprised me that Virat Kohli has left Test captaincy. I think he is still very annoyed with the decision of the selectors or the board when hey said you’re not going to be the captain of the 50-overs side. That I think he still has in mind, he is still thinking ‘why they removed from the 50-over format?’.

“We knew he is going to be the captain for Tests, he was very successful series. I definitely think he is very annoyed with the selectors or the board that he was removed from 50-over captaincy,” Madan Lal said.
