It’s a short-term commercial initiative: Jay Shah hits back at Ramiz Raja’s 4-team T20I series proposal

Since taking over as the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Ramiz Raja has proposed several new tournaments and series in Pakistan and all around the world. Apart from proposing a women’s league in Pakistan, Ramiz also signalled at organising a four-team T20I series featuring India, Pakistan, Australia, and England.

Responding to the same, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Jay Shah has suggested that the chance of the happening of a quadrangular series are low at least now. Speaking to the news agency Reuters, Shah termed the series a ‘short-term commercial initiative’ and the expansion of the game should be prioritised over anything. Further talking about the plans of expanding the game, Shah said that the inclusion in the Olympics will further help the growth of cricket.

“With the IPL window expanding and the ICC (global) events every year in the cycle, our primary responsibility is to safeguard bilateral cricket at home, with emphasis on test cricket.

“I am also looking forward to seeing cricket at the Olympics, as that will help the game grow. Expansion of the sport is a challenge that our game faces and we must prioritise it over any short-term commercial initiative,” Shah said.

Shah also suggested that the board is taking all the necessary steps to start a Women’s IPL very soon. “I want to assure you that BCCI is not only sincere but is taking all necessary steps to start a full-fledged women’s league similar to the IPL soon,” Shah added.

Earlier, in January Ramiz had propsed a ‘T20 Super Series’ model saying that world cricket has a winner in their hand in form of this format.

“Hello fans. Will propose to the ICC a Four Nations T20i Super Series involving Pak Ind Aus Eng to be played every year,to be hosted on a rotation basis by these four. A separate revenue model with profits to be shared on a percentage basis with all ICC members, think we have a winner,” Ramiz had mentioned.
