Prestigious Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) will be felicitating Former Sri Lanka Captain and legendary batter Mahela Jayawardene on February 17 for him being inducted into ICC hall of fame recently, Cricket Age reliably learns.
In November last year, along with South Africa great Shaun Pollock and English Women’s legend Janette Brittin, Mahela was formally inducted by fellow ICC Hall of Famer, Sir Clive Lloyd during the T20 World Cup final between New Zealand and Australia at the Dubai International Stadium.
“The ExCo decided to felicitate Mahela for being inducted into the hall of fame by the ICC. It will take place on the 17th. We are very proud, as he is first cricketer from the club to recieve this honour” a top SSC official told Cricket Age.
The ICC Cricket Hall of Fame recognises the achievements of the legends of the game from cricket’s long and illustrious history. A total of 106 players have been inducted since its launch in 2009, with Brittin, Jayawardena and Pollock as the latest inductees celebrated.
Mahela retired as one of Sri Lanka’s greatest ever players, a key member of the team that won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2014 and reached four other major ICC finals. Following retirement, he proved his greatness in coaching also and at present is amongst world cricket’s finest coaches!
