IPL 2022: Adam Zampa opens up going unsold in the auction- Very tough as an overseas spinner

Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa expressed disappointment over going unsold at the IPL 2022 mega auction, saying that it has become hard for overseas spinners who lack an air of mystery in their bowling style to find teams in T20 leagues. Zampa, who starred in Australia’s T20 World Cup-winning campaign in UAE, had set his base price at Rs 2 crore but failed to find any takers in the two-day mega auction.

Notably, Zampa and Kane Richardson, who presented Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) last season, decided to leave IPL midway during the India phase after COVID-19 cases started rising in India and there were doubts regarding whether Australia would allow any travelers or not.

“It’s very hard as an overseas spinner, particularly if you’re just a specialist spinner who’s not so much of a mystery spinner. The mega-auction, the way it panned out, they spent a lot of money on fast bowlers, a lot of money on allrounders, and even batsmen don’t get great money. They get okay money,” Zampa was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.

Adam Zampa further stated that he will be a valuable addition to any IPL franchise next year based on how he is bowling at present. Zampa has played 14 IPL matches and taken 21 wickets at an average of 17.62 in the league.

“And then once all that money gets spent, they go, ‘Okay, we need some spinners now,’ and usually they feel like the local guys can do an okay job anyway. I think there’ll be opportunities maybe next year in the IPL though I think I’d be a valuable addition to any of those squads, particularly with the way that I’m bowling at the moment,” Zampa concluded.
