‘He’s pretty darn good’: Dale Steyn picks Babar Azam as current era’s best batter across formats

Dale Steyn is one of the all-time greats in the game of cricket. The former South African fast-bowler is amongst the top ten leading wicket-takers of all time in Test matches and is also a hugely respected figure. The 38-year-old was known for his express pace and dominated the number one spot in the ICC Test rankings during the peak of his career, for a record 263 weeks between 2008 and 2014.

The South African announced his retirement from the red-ball format in 2019 and, last year, bid adieu to all forms of the game. He is currently part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad side as a fast-bowling coach for the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League.

The pacer is quite active on social media and often responds to fan questions, and on Thursday, when a fan asked him to choose one batter among the current generation of players who can carry the best batter tag, the former world number one bowler picked Pakistan skipper Babar Azam and called him ‘pretty darn good.’

The 27-year-old recently captained Pakistan in the all-format series against Australia and led his side with an example. The world’s number five Test batter made 196 runs in the fourth innings of the second Test, which was played at the National Stadium in Karachi, to save the game for his side. And then, in the following three-match ODI series, he scored back-to-back hundreds in the second and third match to help his side chase down the target against the Aaron Finch-led side to win the series 2-1.
