When former India head coach Ravi Shastri advised Virat Kohli to leave the Indian Premier League amid his barren run of form, plenty of heads turned. Kohli, who is one of the biggest batters in the world, has been enduring a torrid run with the bat for more than a year. While there’s no denying that leaving the ongoing IPL 2022 midway isn’t an easy solution, it seems like Kohli could be rested from the forthcoming South Africa assignment.
The Indian cricket team is set to take on South Africa and Ireland after the conclusion of the IPL. A number of senior players are expected to be rested from the series while some rookies are likely to be given opportunities.
Workload management is top of the agenda of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), and hence, some senior players from the team are likely to be rested after a gruelling IPL season.
“See, it’s not the first time that a player has gone through a rough patch. It’s only natural. We were anyway looking to give chances to some young bunch and rest the senior players. Virat will be given rest. But if he wants to play, then we will see. We will speak to him before the team selection meeting,” a member of the BCCI selection committee said.
It has also been reported that the selectors will speak to Virat about his form as well as future plans. In fact, the report claims that a few people in the BCCI are also set to ask Kohli if he wants to quit one of the formats.
