Senior India opener Shikhar Dhawan has come out in support of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli and explained why it is important to give rest to the regulars. Kohli is on a one-month break from the game while Rohit has also been rested for many series.
Dhawan said that it is important to give mental rest to players. “A player has to get fresh to give peak performance. If a player plays back-to-back, he will get mentally tired. It is important to give rest mentally. If you see there is rotation in international cricket so that players get rest. If a player travels everywhere, he will get tired. At the end of the day, a cricketer is a human. I feel people at top level understand and accordingly plan to keep a nice balance,” Dhawan told Indiatoday.in.
Kohli was rested for the home T20I series against Sri Lanka earlier in the year and he also missed the 3rd T20I against West Indies. After IPL 2022, the former India captain was rested for the home T20I series against South Africa. He made his return for the series against England but is on rest for the West Indies tour. He will not tour Zimbabwe either.
Rohit has also been given ample rest while he has missed a few series due to injuries as well. The India captain had to miss the complete South Africa tour earlier in the year while he was rested for the home T20Is against the Proteas in June. Rohit was also rested for the ODI series against WI. Dhawan will lead the Men in Blue in Zimbabwe in Rohit’s absence.
