Tilak Varma is a player for the future: Parthiv Patel

Written by Rohit Pawar

Former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel has hailed young Mumbai Indians (MI) batter Tilak Varma for his consistent performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, saying that he is a player of the future.

Varma, 20, has 147 runs in three matches at a strike rate of 158.06 and an average of 73.50. In Mumbai’s first match against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), he scored 84* off 46 balls to kick off IPL 2023 and then he went on to play a match-winning 41-run knock to help Mumbai Indians beat Delhi Capitals (DC) by six wickets at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

“He (Varma) batted at number three and the way he batted on a pitch that wasn’t easy for batters is commendable. His footwork was phenomenal, the way he can get into position quickly. Strike rotations weren’t easy with the way the off-spinners were bowling,” Parthiv said while speaking on JioCinema after MI’s win over DC.

“We see his maturity innings after innings, so I think that was the biggest plus point. When you come in at the start, you can get a good season. After that, everyone knows your playing style, what your strengths are, and your weaknesses. But to come back to the tournament and start like this is worthy of praise. It shows the confidence as well as the maturity of the player. Tilak Varma is a player for the future and there’s no doubt in that.”
