The Indian cricket board (BCCI) on Monday, August 21 announced a 17-member extended squad for Asia Cup 2023. Rohit Sharma will lead the side which has their star players returning from injury layoffs and periods of rest.
The squad was announced by selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar who met the press in New Delhi along with captain Rohit Sharma.
The biggest talking point of the squad was the return of Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul from injury layoffs. Jasprit Bumrah, along with Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj, also returned to the ODI side.
Suryakumar Yadav has retained his place in the side despite his ordinary numbers and recent form in one-day internationals.
Pacer Prasidh Krishna, who also recovered from a back injury, is back in the ODI squad for the first time since August 2022.
As expected, India brought in Tilak Varma, who is yet to make his ODI debut, after his heroics in the West Indies tour in his maiden T20I series.
Ajit Agarkar confirmed that the make-up of the World Cup squad will be similar to their Asia Cup squad but that they have time till September 5 (the cut-off time for provisional squad announcement) to make changes.
