Guyana Amazon Warriors captained by Imran Tahir won the toss and decided to bowl first. This decision of theirs also turned out to be fruitful as they bowled Trinbago Knight Riders out for just 94 runs. This is not only a big win for the team but also for the 44-years-old Tahir as he sets the record for becoming the oldest captain ever to win a T20 trophy. The record was earlier held by former Indian team captain, MS Dhoni who was 41 years old to win a T20 Trophy earlier this year.
After Guyana Amazon Warriors secured their maiden CPL title, Tahir takes a moment and thanks Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who believed in his capabilities as a captain for leading the team to victory. He further adds how many people had also made jokes about his captaincy.
“Many thanks to Ashwin. Before the start of the season, he told me that I can do it and win the CPL. Many people made jokes when I was made captain,” said the winning captain of CPL 2023.
While Tahir celebrates his maiden CPL title, Ashwin will gear up for the 3rd ODI against Australia on 27 September 2023 at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Gujarat. Yesterday, India beat Australia by 99 runs and leads the series by 2-0. Ashwin also had a great spell as he secured 3 wickets for 41 runs (7 overs).
Although Ashwin is not included in the squad for the ICC World Cup 2023, his chances of being a part of the squad at the eleventh hour still remains high. As Axar Patel’s unfortunate injury may have opened a vacant spot for the Indian Spinner.
