Virat Kohli, on Thursday, November 2, became only the second batter to score 4000 runs in international cricket against Sri Lanka. The Indian batter achieved the milestone in the World Cup 2023 match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Kohli got to the feat in only his 72nd match against the Islanders. Sachin Tendulkar is the all-time leading run-scorer against Sri Lanka, having notched 5108 runs from 109 matches at an average of 49.11 with 17 hundreds and 23 half-centuries to show for his efforts.

Kohli is also fourth in the list of most runs by an Indian batter against an opposition. Tendulkar holds the record, having scored 6707 runs in 110 matches against Australia. Kohli has scored 5149 runs from 95 matches against Australia.

Kohli looked fluent in his knock against Sri Lanka right from the word go. After Dilshan Madushanka castled Rohit Sharma with an absolute beauty, Virat joined hands with Shubman Gill to rebuild India’s innings.

Virat got to his half-century off 50 balls and made amends after he bagged a duck against England the other day on a difficult pitch to bat on at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. During his knock against Sri Lanka, Kohli also became the fourth batter after Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma and Pathum Nissanka to score 1000 runs in ODIs in 2023. Before the game, Kohli needed only 34 runs and he reached there with ease.
