ICC allows Sri Lanka to compete in international cricket, loses hosting right to U19 World Cup

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has allowed Sri Lanka to take part in bilateral affairs and ICC events. The ICC took ther decision on Tuesday, November 21 after a meeting with the SLC representatives.

Earlier in November, the apex board suspended Sri Lanka Cricket with immediate effect after “serious breach of its obligations as a Member, in particular, the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and ensure that there is no government interference in the governance, regulation and/or administration of cricket in Sri Lanka”.

However, the ICC will control the funding that goes out to Sri Lanka Cricket.

Sri Lanka, in the meantime, lost the hosting rights for the 2024 U19 World Cup. South Africa, who hosted the tournament back in 2020, is the new host for the tournament to be held in January.

Previously, Roshan Ranasinghe, the Sri Lankan Sports Minister, sacked SLC after the defeat to India in the World Cup 2023 match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After being asked to chase down a mammoth target of 358, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 55 in 19.4 overs.

Mohan de Silva, the secretary of Sri Lanka Cricket, also stepped down from his position.

Sri Lanka had an underwhelming campaign in World Cup 2023, finishing ninth in the points table. Barring their win over the Netherlands and Jos Buttler’s England, the Sri Lankans looked out of sorts throughout the tournament. Angelo Mathews also got involved in a controversy after becoming the first batter at the international level to get ‘timed out’.

They also failed to make their way through to the Champions Trophy to be hosted by Pakistan in 2025.
