Adam Zampa said that Australia ‘could not have written a better script’ in World Cup 2023. On November 19 in front of a packed house at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Pat Cummins and Co. defeated Rohit Sharma’s India by six wickets to win the title for the sixth time in men’s cricket.
Zampa, who is currently playing for the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League (BBL), said that the ‘raw’ feeling of winning the World Cup is yet to sink it.
“We’ve been home for a week, still waking up most mornings, pinching myself. Yeah, we can’t believe it when you look back a few weeks ago in front of 130 thousand people. Couldn’t have written a better script in the way we played the game against India in India. I don’t know when it will sink in; it’s still a little bit raw,” Zampa was quoted as saying to the reporters on the sidelines of the BBL.
Zampa started the World Cup with a couple of lacklustre outings, but there was no stopping him once he found his rhythm. The leg-spinner finished as the second-highest wicket-taker of the tournament, having notched 23 wickets from 11 matches with three four-wicket hauls to show for his efforts.
Zampa said that he was honoured to be a part of the Australian team, both in the T20 World Cup 2021 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the 50-over World Cup on Indian soil.
“I can’t believe that I am at this stage of my career where I always felt that I was scrapping to stay in the Australian team. I never thought that I’d play as much as I have for Australia. You kind of grateful to be there for a lot of it. Then you get to a stage in the last couple of years when we are sitting here, having won a T20 World Cup two years ago and now the ODI World Cup. It means a lot to me,” he added.
