Australia’s legendary off-spinner Nathan Lyon registered his name in record books after picking up 500 Test wickets. He achieved this feat during Australia’s Test series opener against Pakistan in Perth. The hosts won the match by a huge margin of 360 runs, extending their domination at home against Pakistan. One of the highlights of the one-sided Test match was Lyon joining the elite 500 Test wicket club.
Speaking during the post-match presentation, Australian captain Pat Cummins heaped praise on Lyon for achieving the historic feat.
“500 Test wickets around the world is huge. Couldn’t be happier for him. He was out for six months with a calf injury, and it’s great to see him back,” Pat Cummins said.
Lyon became only the eighth bowler, and the third Australian, to reach 500 Test wickets. The off-spinner accomplished this feat on the 4th day after he dismissed Faheem Ashraf.
Lyon had faced a brief setback due to a calf injury during the Ashes earlier in the year. Before the Perth Test, Lyon had 496 wickets against his name and, as expected, got to the major milestone in the series opener. Making his return to Test cricket, Lyon scalped the wickets of Abdullah Shafique, Imam-ul-Haq, and Aamer Jamal during Pakistan’s 1st innings, to move to 499 wickets.
