The T20 World Cup 2024 is around the corner as the Indian selectors will soon announce the squad in the coming days. Since the deadline to submit the provisional squad to the International Cricket Council (ICC) is May 1, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee will likely hold a meeting in Delhi to lock in the final 15 who will fly to the West to participate in the showpiece event, starting June 2 Dallas and Guyana.
As reported by Dainik Jagran, the selectors will meet on April 27 or 28 in New Delhi. The Mumbai Indians are scheduled to play Delhi Capitals next week, on April 27, which means India captain Rohit Sharma will also be in the national capital. Chairman of selectors, Ajit Agarkar, who is currently vacationing abroad, will fly directly to Delhi to join the meeting with his colleagues.
The report further stated that experienced figures would be preferred. Skipper Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep are likely the sure shot selections and if they remain fit, they will board the flight to the US.
All-rounder Hardik Pandya is also in the selection race, but as per the report, his selection completely depends on his performance in the IPL. In the ongoing season, he has picked up only 4 wickets and scored 141 runs in 7 matches.
The toss for a back-up opener is between Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal. While the Gujarat Titans captain is currently among the top-10 scorers of the season with 263 runs in 7 matches, Jaiswal is yet to produce his best. The Rajasthan Royals opener has managed just 121 runs in as many games, averaging only 17.29. Most likely only one of the two batters shall get the nod. However, if the selectors opt to have both of them, either Shivam Dube or Rinku Singh might miss out.
