Abhishek Sharma hits India’s third-fastest T20I hundred

Written by Toshi Pawar

One of India’s most prolific six-hitters, Abhishek Sharma has announced his arrival to international cricket as he bounced back from the duck in the previous game to score a blistering century against Zimbabwe in the second T20I that took place in Harare on Sunday.

The young southpaw was able to get off the mark in cracking style as he smashed a shorter delivery towards the square-leg boundary rope with ease, making use of the fielding restrictions.

Despite slowing down after the powerplay, some blunders were made by Zimbabwe where they deployed the medium pacer, Dion Myers for 28 runs in the over, to get his scoring back to what he has been used to seeing in the IPL. With the lack of pace not threatening the left-hander, Abhishek was able to thrash the bowler for sixes and boundaries all around the ground which gave him the momentum he needed to carry on.

He even went on to attack the likes of Sikandar Raza and Wellington Mazakadza for runs but the latter was able to get the wicket to end the batting onslaught.

Abhishek’s century also makes it the least number of innings needed to score their maiden hundred. He pipped the likes of Deepak Hooda and KL Rahul who have scored their maiden ton after playing just his second game.

In the record books for the fastest century in the format, it still belongs to the former T20I skipper, Rohit Sharma who holds the record with a 35-ball century which came against Sri Lanka in Indore in 2017. However, Abhishek’s ton has made it the fourth quickest to come from an Indian batter which is yet another amazing feat.
