T20 World Cup winning captain Rohit Sharma, premier batter Virat Kohli and fast bowling great Jasprit Bumrah will be opting out of Team India’s next assignment against Sri Lanka, as the trio have been offered a much needed rest and will join the for the Test series against Bangladesh.
The Indian cricket board wants the captain of the T20 World Cup winning team and the other two seniors to take some more rest before returning for a full season in September when Bangladesh travels to India for two Tests and three T20Is starting on September 19. Post Bangladesh, the Indian team will host New Zealand at home from October 16-November 5 for three Tests. They will then fly to South Africa to play four T20I’s between November 8 and 15 before a five-match Test series in Australia starting on November 22.
In the absence of Rohit Sharma, all-rounder Hardik Pandya or KL Rahul will be captaining the ODI team.
India, who were just crowned T20 World Cup champions, will be travelling to Sri Lanka for 3 ODIs and as many as T20Is. With Gautam Gambhir is certain to take over as team India new coach from Sri Lanka series, many fringe players are expected to make a cut in the new looking squads.
