Wanindu Hasaranga step down as Sri Lanka T20 Captain

Written by Rohit Pawar

Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga has relinquished his position as skipper of the national team.

The development comes on the heels of an underwhelming T20 World Cup campaign in USA and West Indies, where Hasaranga led team failed to advance in Super 8 stage. Since then, Head Coach Chris Silverhood and consultant (part time) Mahela Jayawardene have also resigned from their respective posts. Legendary Sanath Jayasuriya has replaced Silverhood as Interim Coach until England series.

“Sri Lanka will always have my utmost best efforts as a player, and I will support and stand by my team and leadership as always,” said Wanindu Hasaranga in his resignation letter.

ODI captain Kusal Mendis is expected to take over T20 side as well.

Sri Lanka’s next assignment is a white ball home series against India, who were just crowned T20 World Cup champions. India’s tour of Sri Lanka consists of 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is. With Gautam Gambhir has take over as team India new coach and legends like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have retired from the shortest format, many fringe players are expected to make a cut in the new looking squads.
