ROHIT Sharma and Virat Kohli have informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that they will be available for three match ODI series against Sri Lanka to be played next month, it is learnt. The BCCI senior selection committee is expected to meet on Thursday evening via zoom call as board secretary Jay Shah has flown to Sri Lanka for the International Cricket Council annual conference.
The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee in consultation with the BCCI has finally decided that Suryakumar Yadav will lead the Indian T20I team for three match series whereas Rohit will continue to lead the Indian side in the ODIs. Cricket Age had earlier reported how Suryakumar was in line to captain the side in the T20Is as the selectors weren’t sure if they should appoint Pandya as a skipper given his past fitness record. Pandya was India’s vice-captain at their triumphant T20 World Cup campaign.
It is understood the selection committee has informed BCCI that they are open to replace Suryakumar as a captain in future, if his performance isn’t satisfactory and doesn’t meet the expectations. The BCCI is eyeing Suryakumar to lead the Indian team at the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup which will be played in India and Sri Lanka.
Although Pandya seemed a front-runner to captain, it is understood that BCCI bosses and selectors spoke to Pandya to explain their plans for the next two years and why they preferred Suryakumar.
