Rohit Sharma was on fire for India in the second ODI against Sri Lanka on Sunday (August 4), which was played at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. The Indian captain faced a total of 44 deliveries, and with the help of five fours and four sixes, he scored 64 runs. For the second match in a row, Rohit top-scored for the Men in Blue but failed to help the side win the match against the hosts.
During his 64-run knock in the second match, Rohit achieved a big milestone. The 37-year-old right-handed batter broke former India captain and head coach Rahul Dravid’s record of 10,768 runs to become India’s fourth-leading run scorer in ODIs. Rohit, who made his ODI debut for India against Ireland in June 2007, has 10,831 runs to his name now in 264 matches.
Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for scoring the most runs for India in ODIs. The legendary batter finished his career with 18,426 runs in 463 matches. He is followed by Virat Kohli, who has 13,886 runs to his name in 294 ODIs, and former India captain Sourav Ganguly, who amassed a total of 11,221 runs in 308 50-over matches for the Men in Blue.
Thanks to his super knock on Sunday, Rohit also went past MS Dhoni’s tally of 10,773 runs to become the 11th leading run scorer in ODIs. Dhoni scored 10,599 runs in 347 ODIs for India and 174 runs in three matches for Asia XI in 2007.
India suffered a shocking defeat by 32 runs against Sri Lanka in the 2nd ODI played in Colombo on Sunday. In reply to Sri Lanka’s total of 240 runs, Team India could only manage to score 208 runs for the loss of 10 wickets in 42.2 overs. Jeffrey Vandersay picked up six wickets for 33 runs in 10 overs to help Charith Asalanka’s men make a super comeback in the match after Rohit and Shubman Gill added 97 runs for the first wicket and seal a famous win.
World No. 1 ODI team India now would like to win the third and final ODI of the series on Wednesday (August 7) to save itself from the embarrassment of losing a bilateral series against Sri Lanka in Gautam Gambhir’s first tour as head coach of the Indian cricket team.
