Former Bangladesh cricket team captain Mashrafe Mortaza’s house in Narail was set on fire by protesters amid the ongoing chaos in the country. The protesters expressed their anger at Mortaza, an MP with the ruling Awami League party, for his silence on the alleged “massacres and mass arrests of students” in Bangladesh. Photos show his house being vandalized and set ablaze by agitators.

Bangladesh was engulfed in political uncertainty on Monday with the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the wake of violent student protests over a government jobs quota scheme. Bangladesh’s Army chief confirmed that Sheikh Hasina had resigned amid reports that she along with her sister had left the country. The Army chief said that the military would help form an interim government to run Bangladesh.

Hasina arrived in India to seek shelter and is expected to fly out to Europe after negotiating a refuge, Meanwhile, the protestors razed the PM’s official residence and vandalised the property.

Mortaza captained Bangladesh in 117 games across different formats, the highest for his nation. Throughout his extensive cricket career, he claimed 390 international wickets and amassed 2,955 runs in 36 Tests, 220 ODIs, and 54 T20Is.

Post-retirement, he ventured into politics in 2018, joining the Hasina-led Awami League, and won a seat as an MP from the Narail-2 constituency.
